Stephen Ames and Mike Weir are in contention at the 2022 Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Ames of Vancouver, British Columbia is tied with American Scott McCarron for the lead at -8. Meanwhile, 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario is two strokes back at -6.
Ames shot a score of -3 on Thursday, and -5 on Friday. In the first round, Ames had six birdies, one bogey and one double bogey. He birdied the fifth, ninth, 10th, 11th, 13th, and 15th holes, bogeyed the the third, and double bogeyed the 18th hole. In the second round, Ames had seven birdies and one double bogey. He birdied the second, eighth, ninth, 10th, 13th, 15th, and 16th holes, and double bogeyed the fourth hole. It is actually fascinating Ames is leading the tournament when he has had two double bogeys.
Weir, who is in third place, shot a score of -6 on Thursday and even par on Friday. In the first round, Weir had eight birdies and two bogeys. He birdied the fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth, 10th, 14th, 16th, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the third and sixth holes. In the second round, Weir had two birdies and two bogeys. He birdied the ninth and 10th holes, and bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes.
There are eight other golfers in contention. Brian Gay of the United States, Steven Aiker of New Zealand and Bernhard Langer of Germany are tied with Weir at -6. Those at -5 are Americans Tracy Phillips and Paul Goydos, along with Australia’s Rod Pampling, Germany’s Alex Cejka, and South Africa’s Ernie Els.
