Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Spencer Martin of Oakville, Ontario recorded his first National Hockey League shutout on Saturday. He accomplished the feat in a 4-0 Carolina Hurricanes win over the Ottawa Senators at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Martin made six saves in the first period, seven saves in the second period, and 11 saves in the third period. Brady Tkachuk led the Senators with seven shots on goal.

Canadians Jordan Martinook of Brandon, Manitoba and Jordan Staal of Thunder Bay, Ontario led the Hurricanes with two points each. Martinook had one goal and one assist, and Staal had two assists. Meanwhile, one other Canadian scored for the Hurricanes. That was William Carrier of LaSalle, Quebec.

This was Martin’s first win of the season. So far he has a record of one win, and one regulation loss, with a goals against average of 2.80, and a save percentage of .891.

With the win, the Hurricanes improved to a record of 12 wins and four losses for 24 points. They are in second place in the Metropolitan Division, and two points back of the New Jersey Devils. However, even though the Devils may have two more points than the Hurricanes, Carolina finds themselves in a much more favourable position as they have five games in hand.
