
We now know the two teams who will play in the 2024 Vanier Cup on Saturday from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. It will be the Laval Rouge et Or and the Laurier Golden Hawks.
The Golden Hawks defeated Bishop’s University Gaiters 48-24 in the 2024 Uteck Bowl from Lennoxville, Quebec on Saturday. In the game featuring the Ontario University champion and the Atlantic University champion, it was quite the game for Golden Hawks quarterback Taylor Elgersma of London, Ontario, and wide receiver Ryan Hughes of Mississauga, Ontario. Elgersma completed 30 of 34 passes for 452 passing yards and five touchdowns. Meanwhile, Hughes had eight catches for 212 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The biggest touchdown pass from Elgersma to Hughes was 74 yards and put the Golden Hawks up 27-3 at the time.
The Rouge et Or, the Quebec champion, defeated the University of Regina Rams, the Canada West champion, 17-14 in the Mitchell Bowl from Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday. Laval was led by quarterback Arnaud Desjardins of Montreal, Quebec, who completed 26 of 34 passes for 281 passing yards and two touchdowns, and wide receiver Olivier Cool of Terrebonne, Quebec, who had 10 catches for 147 receiving yards and one touchdown. The biggest Rouge et Or play came with one minute and 19 seconds left in the game. With the Rouge et Or trailing 14-10, Desjardins threw a game-winning touchdown pass for five yards to Isaac Gaillardetz of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec.
The Golden Hawks are undefeated this season at 11 wins and zero losses. The Rouge et Or only lost once. That came on October 12, when they were beaten 32-31 by the University of Montreal Carabins in overtime.
