QMJHL beats Russia 4-3 in the CIBC Canada/Russia series

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League came away with an impressive 4-3 win over Russia on Tuesday in the second game of the CIBC Canada/Russia Series from the Avenir Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick. Halifax Mooseheads centre Raphael Lavoie of Chambly, Quebec scored the overtime winner at 1:58 of the extra period from Drummondville Voltigeurs center Xavier Simoneau of Saint-Andre-Avellin, Quebec. The series is between the best Canadian players from each league in the Canadian Hockey League against the best junior players from Russia.

Lavoie led the QMJHL in scoring on Tuesday as he notched two goals and one assist for three points. Moncton Wildcats left winger Jakob Pelletier of Quebec City, Quebec  also had a multi-point game as he notched two assists. The other QMJHL goal scorer was Voltigeurs right winger Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland.

Lavoie and Pelletier have both been drafted by Canadian teams in the National Hockey League. Lavoie was the second round draft pick, 38th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and Pelletier was the first round draft pick, 26th overall, by the Calgary Flames in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Russia won the first game of the six game series 4-3 in Saint John, New Brunswick on Monday. The series now shifts to Ontario as there are games played in Kitchener on Thursday and London on Monday between Russia and the Ontario Hockey League. Then next week, the series shifts to Saskatchewan as there games in Saskatoon on November 13 and Prince Albert on November 14 between Russia and the Western Hockey League.
