Prince Edward Island, the host province of the 2023 Canada Winter Games, finally won its first medal of Canada’s biggest multisport national competition of the year. The medal came in judo as Lucas McDonald of Stratford won silver in the male 81 kilogram competition.
McDonald lost 10-0 in the gold medal bout to John Jr. Messe A Bessong of Quebec on Thursday. Lucas Allen of Huntsville, Ontario and Josiah Hallett of La Ronge, Saskatchewan shared the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Yukon won its second and third medals of the 2023 Canada Winter Games, including its first gold medal. Mike Sumner of Whitehorse won gold in the male Special Olympics singles figure skating level three division. Jaymi Hinchey of Whitehorse won the bronze medal in the female 57 kilogram judo division. Hinchey shard the podium with Aliya Koliaska of Lethbridge, Alberta. Catherine Toshkov of Montreal, Quebec won gold and Mahee Savoie of Moncton, New Brunswick won silver. Yukon’s first medal of the 2023 Canada Winter Games came in mixed relay biathlon on February 24.
In other action, Newfoundland won its second gold medal of the 2023 Canada Winter Games on Thursday. Maddox Glover of Conception Bay South won gold in the male Special Olympics singles figure skating level two division. Karl Dietrich of Windsor, Ontario won the silver medal and William Cave of Calgary, Alberta won the bronze medal. Newfoundland’s first gold medal of the 2023 Canada Winter Games came on February 22 in male gymnastics trampoline by Gleb Ebstigneev of Paradise.
Quebec leads the medal standings with 123 medals. They have won 47 gold medals, 34 silver medals, and 42 bronze medals.
