Pierce LePage of Whitby, Ontario won the silver medal on Sunday in the men’s decathlon at the 2022 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. LePage posted a personal best total of 8701 points in the most gruelling track and field event at the World Championships.
Kevin Mayer of France won the gold medal with 8816 points. Zachery Ziemek of the United States won the bronze medal with 8676 points. LePage reached the podium by 169 points over Ayden Owens-Delerme of Puerto Rico, who was in fourth place with 8532 points.
LePage’s best event was the 110 metre hurdles. He posted the fastest time of 13.78 seconds. LePage was also second in the men’s 100 metres with a time of 10.39 (behind Canadian Olympic gold medalist Damian Warner who was at 10.27), seventh in the long jump (7.54 metres), 13th in the shot put (14.83 metres), 16th in the high jump with a season’s best (1.99 metres), second in the 400 metres (46.84 seconds), third in the discus (53.26 seconds), fifth in the pole vault (season best five metres), eighth in the javelin (season best 57.52 metres), and 11th in the 1500 metres (season best 4:42.77).
Warner meanwhile withdrew from the event after falling in the men’s 400 metres on Saturday. The silver medal for LePage will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
