Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto of Toronto, Ontario set the record for most Major League Baseball games played by a Canadian on Sunday. In an 8-5 Reds win over the Chicago Cubs, Votto played in his 1989th game, which broke the record previously set by right fielder Larry Walker of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, who played 1988 games with the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals from 1989 to 2005.

Votto has played all 16 seasons with the Reds. The six-time all-star was the National League Most Valuable Player in 2010.

In 1989 games, Votto is batting .297 with 342 home runs and 1106 runs batted in. During 7036 at bats, he has scored 1145 runs, and has 453 doubles, 22 triples, 80 stolen bases, 1338 walks, 3616 total bases, 48 sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .413 and a slugging percentage of .514.

So far this season, Votto is batting .210 with 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in. During 314 at bats, he scored 31 runs, and has 66 hits, 18 doubles, one triple, 44 walks, 119 total bases, an on base percentage of .326 and a slugging percentage of .379.

On the field, it has been a tough season for the Reds. They have a record of 45 wins and 68 losses, in fourth place in the National League Central, and are 17.5 games back of the division-leading St. Louis Cardinals.
