Former NHL defenseman Larry Trader passes away at age 61

Former National Hockey League defenseman Larry Trader of Barry’s Bay, Ontario passed away at the age of 61 on Wednesday according to Bob Duff of detroithockeynow.com on Thursday. No cause of death was given. Trader played four seasons in the National Hockey League from 1982 to 1988. He played two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings in 1982-83 and 1984-85, two seasons with the St. Louis Blues in the seasons of 1986-87, and 1987-88, and one season with the Montreal Canadiens in 1987-88.

Trader had five goals and 13 assists for 18 points in 91 NHL regular season games. He was a -1 with 74 penalty minutes, five power-play points and 76 shots on goal.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Trader played three games with the Red Wings in 1985. Detroit lost the best out of five Norris Division semifinal series to the Chicago Black Hawks three games to none.

In 1987, Trader was part of the Canadian team that won the 1987 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. Canada won the gold medal by beating the Soviet Union’s Krylya Sovetov Moscow 4-3 in the final. The gold medal game needed a shootout to determine the champion.

Trader was the cousin of former Calgary Flames defenseman Jim Peplinski of Renfrew, Ontario. Peplinski was the Flames captain, and won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989.
