Eleanor Harvey of Hamilton, Ontario won a silver medal in the women’s foil fencing competition at the Incheon Grand Prix in South Korea on Sunday. It was Harvey’s second career Grand Prix medal as she previously won a bronze medal in Shanghai, China in May of 2018.

Harvey went through the competition with a record of five wins and one loss. She defeated Sena Hong of South Korea 13-12 in the first round, Martina Sinigalia of Italy 15-4 in the second round, Anita Blaze of France 15-12 in the third round, Francesca Polumbo of Italy 13-7 in the quarterfinals, and Alice Volpi of Italy 15-13 in the semifinals. Harvey then lost to Lee Kiefer of the United States 15-11 in the gold medal match. Anne Sauer of Germany and Volpi shared the bronze medal, as they each lost the semifinal match.

Harvey was one of two Canadians to reach the quarterfinals in the women’s foil fencing competition at the Incheon Grand Prix. The other was Jessica Guo of Toronto, Ontario. The 16-year-old phenom reached the final eight before losing to Volpi 15-8.

There is no doubt the future of Canadian women’s foil fencing is extremely bright at the moment. Harvey and Guo are currently ranked third and fourth in the world respectively, behind only Kiefer and Volpi. The silver medal for Harvey will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
