Canada wins two cycling bronze medals at 2024 Paralympic Games

Team Canada won two more bronze medals in cycling on day two of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The medals came in the 3000 metre individual pursuit. Alexandre Hayward of Campbelltown, New Brunswick won bronze in the men’s C3 classification, and Keely Shaw of Midale, Saskatchewan won bronze in the women’s C4 classification.

Hayward had a spinal injury while playing hockey. Shaw was partially paralyzed on her left side from a horse riding accident.

In the men’s 3000 metre individual pursuit cycling competition, Hayward won the bronze medal by beating Eduardo Santas Asensio of Spain. Hayward had a time of 3:24.865. Santas Asensio had a time of 3:28.617. Great Britain won gold and silver. Jaco van Gass won the gold medal with a time of 3:18.46 and Finlay Graham won the silver medal with a time of 3:22.54,

In the women’s 3000 metre individual pursuit cycling competition, Shaw won the bronze medal by beating Samantha Bosco of the United States. Shaw had a time of 3:46.942. Bosco had a time of 3:48.589. Emily Petricola of Australia won the gold medal and Anna Taylor of New Zealand won the silver medal.

In team events, Canada defeated Germany 54-47 in wheelchair rugby to improve to a record of one win and one loss. Meanwhile, Canada beat France 83-68 in men’s wheelchair basketball.

Team Canada has four bronze medals for four medals overall. They are tied for 15th place in the overall medal standings.
