Gabriel Diallo of Montreal, Quebec is in the third round of the 2024 United States Open. In the second round, Diallo raised eyebrows with an impressive four set performance where he beat Arthur Fils of France 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Throughout the match Diallo saw Fils’s serve very well. He broke Fils five times in 10 break point opportunities. When it came to total points, Diallo won 140 points, while Fils won 125 points.
This was the first ever meeting between Diallo and Fils. Heading into the final major of the year, Fils was ranked 24th in the world, and Diallo was ranked 143rd in the world. With the win, it is expected Diallo will pass fellow Canadian and 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shaopovalov of Toronto, Ontario in the new ATP rankings at the end of the 2024 United States Open. The tournament will conclude September 8.
Next up for Diallo is American Tommy Paul of Voorhees Township, New Jersey. Paul, the 14th seed, reached the semifinals of the 2023 Australian Open. This will be their first ever meeting.
Diallo has performed extraordinary in Davis Cup action over the last year. He has won four key matches. Diallo beat world number 18 and 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 7-5, 6-4 and Sweden’s Elias Ymer 6-4, 6-3 in 2023 Group Stage results in Bologna, Italy, and South Korea’s Soon-woo Kwon 6-4, 6-4 and Seong-chan Hong of South Korea 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in Davis Cup qualifying in Montreal this past February.
