Canada wins two swimming silver medals at the Paralympics

Team Canada is up to six medals (two silver medals and four bronze medals) at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. On Saturday, Canada won two silver medals in swimming. Nicholas Bennett of Parksville, British Columbia placed second in the men’s 200 metre freestyle S14 classification, and Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ontario placed second in the women’s 200 metre individual medley SM7 classification.

Bennett, who suffers from autism spectrum disorder, had a time of 1:53.61. William Ellard of Great Britain won the gold medal with a time of 1:51.30 in world record time. Jack Ireland of Australia won the bronze medal with a time of 1:53.77. Bennett reached the podium by 0.87 seconds. Dmytro Vanzenko of Ukraine finished in fourth place with a time of 1:54.48.

Routliffe, who suffers from hypochondroplasia (also known as dwarfism), had a time of 2:57.17. Mallory Weggemann of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 2:53.29. Julia Gaffney of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 3:01.27. Routliffe reached the podium by 6.08 seconds over Iona Winnifrith, who finished in fourth place with a time of 3:03.25.

Finally in women’s wheelchair basketball, Canada defeated Great Britain by a score of 63-54. With the win, Canada improves to one win and one loss. Arinn Young of St. Albert, Alberta led Canada with 26 points.
