Canada reaches semifinals in wheelchair curling at 2022 Paralympic Winter Games

Team Canada has reached the semifinals in wheelchair curling at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Wednesday evening (Thursday morning in China), Team Canada improved to a round robin record of seven wins and three losses following a 7-6 win over Norway.

It was an impressive come from behind victory for Team Canada. The Canadian team skipped by Mark Ideson of Parry Sound, Ontario, were once down 5-2 after five ends, before they outscored Norway 5-1 in the final three ends.

Canada will now play China in the semifinals on Thursday evening in western Canada (11:30 p.m. MT), and Friday afternoon in Beijing (2:30 p.m.). Remember, Canada actually beat China 7-3 to begin the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games wheelchair tournament on Saturday. The Chinese, who are the defending gold medalists from the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, had the best record in the round robin in the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games at eight wins and two losses. China’s only other loss came to Sweden by a score of 5-1.

The winner of the game between Canada and China will play the winner of the Slovakia and Sweden. Interestingly, Canada lost to Sweden and Slovakia in the round robin. Both semifinals will take place simultaneously. The bronze medal game will be at 4:30 a.m. MT on Friday, and the gold medal game will be on Friday night at 11:35 p.m. MT.
