Canada reaches final of 2022 World Women’s Lacrosse Championship

Team Canada is in the final of the 2022 World Women’s Lacrosse Championship in Towson, Maryland. This will be the third straight World Women’s Lacrosse Championship Canada has participated in. They lost the gold medal game to the United States 19-5 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada in 2013, and then the gold medal game again to the United States 10-5 in Guildford, England in 2017.

In the semifinal on Thursday, Canada defeated England 11-9. Erica Evans of Peterborough, Ontario led Canada with four goals. Meanwhile, Aurora Cordingley of Oakville, Ontario had three goals and one assist, and Nicole Perroni of Whitby, Ontario scored twice. The other two Canadian goal scorers were Madalyn Baxter of Whitby and Alie Jimerson also scored.

Canada went through Pool A play with a record of three wins and one loss. They defeated Australia 9-5 on Canada Day, England 13-8 on July 3, and then clobbered Scotland 20-1 on July 4. In the first round of the Championship Division, Canada beat Puerto Rico 17-6 on July 5, and then in the quarterfinals beat the Czech Republic 15-7 on July 6.

In addition to the two previous silver medals at the World Women’s Lacrosse Championship, Canada has won two bronze medals. They finished third in 1982 in Nottingham, England and in 2009 in Prague, Czech Republic. The United States meanwhile have won eight of the 10 World Women’s Lacrosse Championships all-time. Ironically, the only two they have not won were the two they hosted. They were won by Australia in 1986 in 2005.
