Canada clinches first place in Group A in women’s hockey at 2022 Olympic Winter Games

Team Canada will enter the playoff round of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing as the Group A champion. On Monday evening in Canada (Tuesday morning in Beijing), Canada defeated their archival, the United States 4-2 in the Olympic women’s hockey competition.

The Canadian team was led by Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ontario, who had two goals. Meanwhile Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec scored on the first ever penalty shot attempt in the history of the Olympic women’s hockey tournament according to Josh Wegman of The Score.  She also had an assist for two points. The other goal for Team Canada in their win over the United States was Jamie Lee Rattray of Ottawa, Ontario.

Canada will now play the third place team in Group B. There are more gams to be played in the group, but at this time Canada’s opponent would be the host team from China.

In a remarkable statistic, the top seven scorers at this time in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament are all Canadian. Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario is the leader in scoring with 11 points (two goals and nine assists). She is followed by Jenner (five goals and three assists for eight points), Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario (four goals and four assists for eight points), Poulin (two goals and six assists for eight points), Sarah Fillier of Georgetown. Ontario (five goals and two assists for seven points), Rattray (three goals and three assists for six points), and Rebecca Johnston of Sudbury, Ontario (two goals and four assists for six points).
