
After a four-set loss to Poland in the Volleyball Women’s Nations League in Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana on Wednesday, Team Canada bounced back with a straight sets win over the Dominican Republic to even their record to one win and one loss on Thursday. The Canadian team won in straight sets 25-18, 25-15, 25-18.
Alexa Gray of Calgary, Alberta led the Canadian team with 19 total points. She was one of two Canadian players to reach double digits in points. The other was Kiera Van Ryk of Surrey, British Columbia had 18 total points. Of Gray’s 19 total points, 18 came from an attack hit, while one point came from a block. Van Ryk meanwhile had 13 points from an attack hit, three from aces and two from blocks. Gray led Canada with 18 attack points. Van Ryk led Canada with three aces, and Hilary Howe led Canada with three block points.
Team Canada has two more games this weekend in Pool 1 play. They play the United States on Friday, and then South Korea on Saturday. The Canadians travel to the Philippines in the middle of June, and then travel home to Calgary at the end of the month. The top eight teams from the 16 team tournament qualify for the quarterfinals. Remember each country does not play everyone. Each team plays a 12-game schedule to determine what nations qualify for the next stage.
