Cameron Alexander of North Vancouver, British Columbia won the bronze medal in the men’s downhill on Sunday at the 2022 World Alpine Skiing Championships in Courchevel, France. It was Canada’s second medal of the championships, after Canadian Olympic bronze medalist James Crawford of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal in the men’s super giant slalom on Thursday. This was the first World Alpine Skiing Championships since 2017 in St. Moritz, Switzerland where Canada won multiple medals at a single World Alpine Skiing Championship. That year Canada won three medals. In fact, Canada had not won a medal at the World Alpine Skiing Championship since 2017 either.

In the men’s downhill, Alexander had a third place time of 1:47.94. Marco Odermatt of Switzerland won the gold medal with a time of 1:47.05. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway won the silver medal with a time of 1:47.53. Alexander reached the podium by .04 seconds over Marco Schwarz of Austria, who had a fourth place time of 1:47.98.

Alexander first came on the high performance skiing scene when he won a men’s downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway on April 3, 2022. He won the gold medal despite starting from the 39th position. The bronze medal in Courchevel, will give Alexander confidence as he prepares for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
