Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Newfoundland is in the final of the 2021 Canadian Olympic Men’s Curling Trials. On Friday, Team Gushue defeated Mike McEwen of Winnipeg, Manitoba 6-4 to finish up pool play from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Gushue won his Olympic gold medal at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, becoming the first Canadian men’s curling team to ever win Olympic gold.

A major reason why Gushue was victorious is because McEwen’s stone picked in the eighth end. This allowed Gushue to score three points with the hammer. Gushue finished up the round robin with a record of seven wins and one loss, with his only loss coming to Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson by a score of 7-6 on Wednesday. Ironically, it was only of two victories for Gunnlaugson in the Canadian Olympic Men’s Curling Trials. His other win came over Sudbury’s Tanner Horgan on Tuesday by a score of 11-6. Gushue will now play the winner of Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario and Kevin Koe of Alberta.

On the women’s side, Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, Manitoba finished the round robin in second place at five wins and three losses. She will play one of three teams in the semifinal. They will either be Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson, Alberta’s Casey Scheidgger, or Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville.
