Team Yukon has won its first medal of the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island. At the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park in North Wiltshire, Prince Edward Island on Friday, the Yukon team of Cheyenne Tirschmann and Cole Germain of Whitehorse won the bronze medal in the mixed biathlon relay.
Tirschmann and Germain posted a third place time of 59 minutes, 44.9 seconds. They were one of three teams to complete the competition in less than one hour. Isabelle Caza of Chelsea, Quebec and Jean-Nicolas de Broeck, Quebec won the gold medal with a time of 58 minutes and 52 seconds. Peter Rojkovski and Wallis Siemens of Calgary, Alberta won the silver medal with a time of 59 minutes and 39.4 seconds. Tirschmann and Germain reached the podium by one minute, 46.8 seconds. Aliah Turner of Prince George, British Columbia and Alexander Hatloe of Whistler, British Columbia finished in fourth place with a time of one hour, one minute, 31.7 seconds.
Saskatchewan meanwhile won its first three gold medals at the Canada Winter Games. Rylee Miller of Saskatoon won gold in the female floor gymnastics event. Jordan Carroll of Saskatoon won gold in the male pommel horse gymnastics event, and Luca Veeman of Saskatoon won the male mass start speed skating event. Saskatchewan is now fifth in the medal standings with 16 medals (three gold medals, six silver medals and seven bronze medals).
Meanwhile in speed skating, Sofia Bieber of Winnipeg continues to have an outstanding Canada Winter Games. She won two more gold medals in Halifax on Friday as she placed first in the female mass start and 1000 metre event. Bieber previously won gold in the female 500 metre event, silver in the female team pursuit and silver in the female 1500 m speed skating.
In female curling, Nova Scotia beat Alberta 9-5 in the gold medal game. The Nova Scotia skip was Sophie Blades of Hammonds Plains. It was Nova Scotia’s first ever gold medal in female curling at the Canada Winter Games.
Quebec continues to lead the overall medal standings with 68. They have won 27 gold medals, 23 silver medals and 18 bronze medals.
