According to J.P. Hoornstra of The Big Lead, former Montreal Canadiens All-Star left winger Andre Pronovost of Shawinigan Falls, Quebec passed away at the age of 90 on Tuesday. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Pronovost played 10 National Hockey League seasons from 1956 to 1968. He was with the Canadiens from 1956 to 1960, with the Boston Bruins from 1960 to 1962, with the Detroit Red Wings from 1962 to 1964, and with the Minnesota North Stars from 1967 to 1968.
In 557 NHL games, Pronovost had 94 goals and 104 assists for 198 points. He had 405 penalty minutes, 16 power-play points, and 11 game-winning goals.
The first four NHL seasons were very memorable for Pronovost. That is because he won the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens. In 38 postseason games during that time, Pronovost had six goals and three assists for nine points. The Canadiens beat the Bruins in five games in 1957, beat the Bruins in six games in 1958, beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in five games in 1959, and the Maple Leafs again in a four game sweep in 1960.
Pronovost played in the NHL All-Star Game in his first four NHL seasons from 1957 to 1960. The format was different in the 1950s as it is today. The defending Stanley Cup champion played NHL All-Stars from the other five NHL teams. Ibn those four seasons, Pronovost had 47 goals and 56 goals for 103 regular season points.
