Vegas Golden Knights name Bruce Cassidy head coach

According to the Associated Press on Tuesday, the Vegas Golden Knights have named Bruce Cassidy of Ottawa, Ontario as their new head coach. Cassidy takes over from Peter DeBoer of Dunnville, Ontario, who was relieved of his duties on May 16.

Cassidy becomes the third head coach in the Golden Knights history. He joins DeBoer and Gerard Gallant of Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

The Golden Knights will be the third National Hockey League team that Cassidy has been a head coach for. He was previously with the Washington Capitals for two seasons and the Boston Bruins for six seasons. Cassidy has a regular season record of 295 wins and 155 regulation losses, nine ties, and 53 losses in extra time, for a winning percentage of .635.

In the playoffs, Cassidy led the Bruins to the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. However the Bruins lost in seven games to the St. Louis Blues. It was the Blues’ first Stanley Cup title in franchise history.

Cassidy also brings NHL playing experience to the Golden Knights. He spent six seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks from 1983 to 1990. In 36 games as a defenseman, Cassidy had four goals and 13 assists for 17 points, was a -10 with 10 penalty minutes, 10 power-play points and 64 shots on goal.
