Summer McIntosh sets two world records at 2024 World Short Course Swimming Championships

Three-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario set two short course world records this past week at the 2024 World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The length of the pool at these world championships is only 25 metres, compared to the standard 50 metres.

On Tuesday, McIntosh posted a world record time of 3:50.25 in the women’s 400 metre freestyle. Bingjie Li of China had the old world record of 3:51.30 in Beijing, China on October 27, 2022. Lani Pallister of Australia won the silver medal in Hungary with a time of 3:53.73. Meanwhile, Canadian Mary-Sophie Harvey of Laval, Quebec won the silver medal with a time of 3:54.88.

On Thursday, McIntosh posted a world record time of 1:59.32 in the women’s 200 metre butterfly. Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain had the old world record of 1:59.61 on December 3, 2014 in Doha, Qatar. Regan Smith of the United States won the silver medal in Hungary with a time of 2:01.00. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia won the bronze medal with a time of 2:02.91.

McIntosh won a third medal in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay as Canada won bronze. Ingrid Wilm of Calgary, Alberta won the bronze medal in the women’s 100 metre backstroke, Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Ilya Kharun of Montreal, Quebec won a gold medal in the men’s 200 metre butterfly and bronze in the men’s 50 metre butterfly, Finlay Knox of Okotoks, Alberta win bronze in the men’s 200 metre individual medley, and Canada won silver in the 4×50 metre mixed medley relay.
