Summer McIntosh sets Canadian record in women’s 400m individual medley

Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario set a Canadian record in the women’s 400 metre individual medley at the 2022 United States Open Swimming Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina on Friday according to Annika Johnson of swimswam.com. She posted a time of 4:28.61. McIntosh had the previous Canadian record of 4:29.01, which was set at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

McIntosh reached the podium by 21.5 seconds. Alexis Yager of the United States finished in fourth place with a time of 4:50.11. Emma Weyant of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 4:41.85. Kathryn Hazle of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 4:47.56.

McIntosh has three Canadian records in long course swimming. She has a time of 3:59.32 in the women’s 400 metre freestyle, which was set at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and a time of 2:05.20 in the women’s 200 metre butterfly, which was set at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest. In an interesting result, even though McIntosh won the gold medal in the butterfly, she only won silver in the freestyle. She placed behind Ariarne Titmus of Australia, who won the gold medal with a time of 3:58.06. The national record for McIntosh will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
