Skylar Park of Winnipeg, Manitoba won a bronze medal on Friday at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester, Great Britain. Park placed third in the women’s 57 kilogram featherweight division. This was Park’s first career medal at the World Taekwondo Championships and Canada’s first medal at the World Taekwondo Championships since Jasmine Vokey of Calgary, Alberta won the bronze medal in the women’s 73 kilogram middleweight division in 2013 in Puebla, Mexico.

Park, who won the gold medal for Canada at the 2016 World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Burnaby, British Columbia and the 2018 Pan American Taekwondo Championships in Spokane, Washington, won Canada’s only medal at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships. Part of section two, Park received a bye to the second round.

In her first match, she beat Fernanda Aguirre of Chile 17-7. She then beat Suvi Mikkonen of Finland 41-12 in the round of 16 and then Nikita Glasnovic of Croatia 14-11 in the quarterfinals, before losing to Jade Jones of Great Britain 18-12 in the semifinals. Jones then beat silver medalist Ah-reum Lee of South Korea 14-7 in the gold medal game. Lijun Zhou of China won the other bronze medal.

The bronze medal for Park at the World Championship makes her a medal contender for Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Unlike many athletes who competed in Manchester, Park will not need to move to a higher or lower weight class to compete in Tokyo, as the women’s 57 kilogram division is part of the Olympic program.
