The Halifax Mooseheads have used home ice to their best advantage at the 2019 Memorial Cup.On Sunday night they improved to a record of two wins and zero losses following a 4-2 win over the Guelph Storm at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Storm fell to a record of one win and one loss.
Maxim Trepanier of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec and captain Antoine Morand of Chateauguay, Quebec led the Mooseheads in scoring with two points. They notched one goal and one assist each. The other Mooseheads goal scorers were assistant captain Samuel Asselin of L’Assomption, Quebec and Raphael Lavoie of Chambly, Quebec.
Morand opened the scoring in the first period from Jocktan Chainey of Asbestos, Quebec and Arnaud Durandeau of Beaconsfield, Quebec. Sean Durzi of Mississauga, Ontario then tied the game with a goal 50 seconds left in the first period. It was one of two goals in the game for Durzi.
The Mooseheads then went up 3-1 with two second period goals. Lavoie’s goal was shorthanded and Trepanier’s goal was the game winning goal. The Storm then scored an early third period power play goal to pull within one before Asselin countered with an insurance marker.
The Mooseheads beat the Prince Albert Raiders 4-1 to open the tournament on Friday. Then on Saturday, the Storm won their first game of the 2019 Memorial Cup when they beat the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 5-2. The Huskies will play the Raiders on Monday night in a gigantic game as both teams lost their opening game on the weekend.
