
The Shawinigan Cataractes have won their opening game of the 2022 Memorial Cup in Saint John, New Brunswick. In the second game of the tournament on Tuesday, the 2022 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions upset the Western Hockey League champion Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3.
The Cataractes were trailing the Oil Kings 3-2 heading into the third period. However, they got a game-tying goal from Pierrick Dube, and then a game-winning goal from Olivier Nadeau of Lac-Etchemin, Quebec.
Shawinigan was lead in scoring by right winger Xavier Bourgault of L’Islet, Quebec and center Mavrik Bourque of Plessisville, Quebec, who each had two points. Bourgault had one goal and one assist, while Bourque had two assists. Bourgault and Bourque both assisted on the Shawinigan goal by Nadeau at 6:55 of the third period, which at the time broke a 3-3 deadlock.
The other Cataractes goal scorer was Jordan Tourigny of Victoriaville, Quebec. He opened the scoring at 10:11 of the first period with an unassisted power-play marker.
Shawinigan is currently in a tie for first place in the 2022 Memorial Cup round robin standings. They are tied with the Saint John Sea Dogs. Saint John beat the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-3 in the opening game of the tournament on Monday. On Wednesday, Edmonton plays Saint John.
