Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec is in the semifinals of the 2026 Singapore Tennis Open. On Friday in the quarterfinals, Fernandez upset the first seed and 2026 French Open champion Mirra Andreeva of Russia, 6-2, 7-5.
Fernandez is the sixth seed in Singapore. A key statistic in the match was winning percentage on first serve. Fernandez was at 82% and Andreeva was at 50%. Fernandez also broke Andreeva six times in 11 opportunities.
This was the third time in five matches head-to-head that Fernandez has beaten Andreeva. Fernandez previously won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the 2023 Hong Kong Tennis Open and 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of the 2026 National Bank Open in Toronto earlier this summer.
Next up for Fernandez in the semifinals is the fifth seed, Maja Chwalinska of Poland. Chwalinska made headlines earlier this year as she made the French Open final as an unseeded player before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Andreeva.
This will be the first ever meeting between Chwalinska and Fernandez. The winner will face Talia Gibson of Australia on Sunday. This will also be Fernandez’s very first WTA Grand Slam semifinal in 2026. Her greatest accomplishment as a professional women’s tennis player was reaching the finals of the 2021 United States Open from Flushing Meadows, New York.
