The San Jose Sharks have named Macklin Celebrini of North Vancouver, British Columbia the team captain on Friday. He is the 10th full time Canadian captain in the history of the Sharks organization, and according to the Canadian Press, is the youngest captain in Sharks franchise history.
Celebrini is entering his third season with the Sharks. In 2025-26, he had 45 goals and 70 assists for 115 points. He was a +8 with 44 penalty minutes, 33 power-play points, five game-winning goals, 287 shots on goal, 625 faceoff wins, 53 blocked shots, 53 hits, 41 takeaways, and 150 giveaways.
The first captain in Sharks franchise history was defenseman Doug Wilson of Ottawa, Ontario (1991-1993). Wilson was followed by Bob Errey of Montreal, Quebec (1993-1995), Jeff Odgers of Spy Hill, Saskatchewan (1995-1996), Todd Gill of Brockville, Ontario (1996-1998), Owen Nolan of Thorold, Ontario (1998-2003), Patrick Marleau of Swift Current, Saskatchewan (2003-2009), Rob Blake of Simcoe, Ontario (2009-2010), Joe Thornton of London, Ontario (2010-2014), and Logan Couture of Guelph, Ontario (2019-25). It should be noted that the Sharks had three other rotating Canadian captains during the 2003-04 season. They were Vincent Damphousse of Montreal, Quebec, Alyn McCauley of Brockville, Ontario, and Mike Ricci of Scarborough, Ontario.
Four Sharks captains were Canadian Olympic gold medalists in men’s ice hockey. Nolan and Blake won gold for Canada at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Thornton and Marleau won gold for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Marleau won gold at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
