Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec is in the final of the 2026 Singapore Tennis Open. On Saturday in the semifinals, Fernandez delivered an upset as she beat Maja Chwalinska of Poland, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
This was a battle of grand slam finalists. Fernandez reached the final of the 2021 United States Open. Chwalinska reached the final of the 2026 French Open.
It was an impressive bounce back match for Fernandez. She played horrendous tennis in the first half hour. However, Fernandez regrouped extremely well and won nine of the last 12 games to win the match.
Fernandez was seeded sixth at the Singapore Open, and Chwalinska was seeded fifth. In the WTA rankings, Chwalinska is ranked 25th and Fernandez is 31st. This was Fernandez’s second upset at the 2026 Singapore Tennis Open. On Friday in the quarterfinals, Fernandez surprisingly beat the Singapore Tennis Open number one seed, the fifth ranked player in the world and French Open champion Mirra Andreeva of Russia. 6-2, 7-5.
In the final on Sunday, Fernandez will face Talia Gibson of Australia. This will be their first ever meeting head-to-head. It will be Fernandez’s ninth WTA final of her career. She has previously won five WTA finals–the 2021 and 2022 Monterrey Open, the 2023 Hong Kong Open, the 2025 Washington Open and the 2025 Japan Women’s Open.
