Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario has been named the Professional Women’s Hockey League First Star of the Week for the period from April 22 to 28, 2024. The Toronto forward played in one game, and it was memorable as she recorded her first career PWHL hat trick in a 6-2 win over New York on April 28.
Nurse scored her three goals on five shots on net. She was a +3 with 16 faceoff wins and one power-play goal in 17 minutes and 58 seconds worth of ice time. Nurse’s power-play goal came at 12:26 of the second period from Canadian Olympic gold medalist Renata Fast of Hamilton and Hannah Miller of North Vancouver, British Columbia. At the time, Toronto went up 2-0.
This is the second time this season Nurse was named PWHL First Star of the Week. She was first honoured the week from February 27 to March 3.
In 22 games this season, Nurse has 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points. She is a +5 with 14 penalty minutes, 155 faceoff wins, one power play goal, two game-winning goals, and 61 shots on goal. The first game-winning goal came on February 27 in a 4-3 Toronto win over Minnesota. Nurse scored at 3:46 of the extra period from defenseman Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne, Manitoba and Emma Maltais of Burlington, Ontario. Like Nurse and Fast, Larocque and Maltais are Canadian Olympic gold medalists. The second game-winning goal came on April 20 in a 3-2 Toronto win over Montreal. Nurse scored from Fast and Maltais at the 13 second mark of overtime.
Larocque won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Larocque, Maltais, Nurse, and Fast won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
In the PWHL standings, Toronto is in a first place tie with Montreal. Both teams have 41 points.
