Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec is in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Madrid Open. On Tuesday, Auger-Aliassime defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud, the fifth seed, and three-time grand slam singles finalist, 6-4, 7-5.

It was an outstanding match for Auger-Aliassime, who broke Ruud three times in eight opportunities. The match lasted one hour and 59 minutes. Ruud has been one of the best tennis players on clay this season as he reached the final of Monte Carlo and won Barcelona. The three times Ruud reached a grand slam final were the 2022 and 2023 French Open on clay, and the 2022 United States Open. Auger-Aliassime’s best grand slam result was reaching the semifinals of the 2021 United States Open.

This was the second time in five matches that Auger-Aliassime has beaten Ruud. Auger-Aliassime’s prior win came in Miami in 2019, where he won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Next up for Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals on Thursday is the number one seed, Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the 2024 Australian Open champion. Auger-Aliassime has beaten Sinner twice in two opportunities. The first time was in the fourth round of Madrid in 2022 (6-1, 6-2), and the second time in the fourth round of Cincinnati in 2022 (2-6, 7-6, 6-1).  The other three quarterfinal matchups have Carlos Alcaraz of Spain versus Andrey Rublev of Russia, Taylor Fritz of the United States versus Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina, and Daniil Medvedev of Russia versus Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic.
