Roberto Luongo and Herb Carnegie to be inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Roberto Luongo of Montreal, Quebec and builder Herb Carnegie of Toronto, Ontario are being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022 according to The Athletic on Monday.

Luongo won a gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. He played 19 seasons as a goaltender in the National Hockey League from 1999 to 2019 with the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and Vancouver Canucks.

In 1044 National Hockey League regular season games, Luongo had a record of 489 wins, 392 regulation losses, and 124 ties or losses in extra time. He also had 77 shutouts, a goals against average of 2.52 and a save percentage of .919. In the playoffs, Luongo had a record of 34 wins, 35 losses, five shutouts, a goals against average of 2.49 and a save percentage of .918. When the Canucks went to the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals and lost in seven games to the Boston Bruins, Luongo led all goalies in playoff shutouts with four. Also during the 2010-11 NHL regular season, Luongo led the NHL with 38 wins and won the William M. Jennings Trophy for the lowest goals against average in the NHL. While with the Panthers, Luongo led the NHL in saves with 2303 in 2003-04, and 2275 in 2005-06.

Carnegie was being honoured for creating the Future Aces Hockey School in 1953. The school was to promote respect, tolerance, diversity and sportsmanship. Carnegie was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Three other inductees had Canadian connections. Henrik and Daniel Sedin played for the Vancouver Canucks and Daniel Alfredsson played for the Ottawa Senators.
