According to the Canadian Football League on Wednesday, the Ottawa Redblacks have signed defensive back Dagogo Maxwell from the Calgary Stampeders. Even though Maxwell is a native of Nigeria, he is considered Canadian because he attended the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds of USports in 2017.

Maxwell was a fifth round draft pick in the 2018 Canadian Football League Draft. He was selected 42nd overall from the Thunderbirds.

Maxwell was the sixth defensive back taken in the 2018 CFL Draft. He followed Godfrey Onyeka of Brampton, Ontario, who was selected 10th overall by the Edmonton Eskimos from Wilfrid Laurier; Jackson Bennett of Cumberland, Ontario, who was selected 11th overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from the University of Ottawa; Jordan Beaulieu of Montreal, Quebec, who was selected 24th overall by the Eskimos from the University of Western; Royce Metchie, who was selected 25th overall by the Stampeders from the University of Guelph, and Isaiah Guzylak-Messam of Hamilton, Ontario, who was selected 34th overall by the British Columbia Lions.

Last season with the Stampeders, Maxwell had six special teams tackles. During 2017 with the Thunderbirds, Maxwell was a strong force on the football field. He had 52 defensive tackles, seven knonckdowns and one interception. The Thunderbirds reached the 2017 Hardy Cup, but lost 44-43 to the University of Calgary Dinos in a dramatic finish. On the final play of the game, Dinos kicker Niko DiFonte of Winnipeg, Manitoba kicked a 59-yard field goal to win the game. DiFonte’s 59 yard field goal was the longest field goal in Canada West Football history.
