Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Ottawa, Ontario won the bronze medal on Saturday in ice dancing at the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships in Saitama, Japan. This was their second consecutive bronze medal at the World Figure Skating Championships, as they previously won in 2021 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Gilles and Poirier, who played to the music in the free dance to Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, posted a score of 217.88 points. Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States won the gold medal with a score of 226.01 points. Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy won the silver medal with 219.85 points. Gilles and Poirier reached the podium by 3.15 points over Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain, who finished in fourth place with a score of 214.73 points.

The ice dance event did not come without controversy, however. Chock and Bates won gold even though Chock fell, while Fabbri made a mistake with his twizzle.

This was Canada’s only medal at the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships. Canada was one of six nations to earn a medal. Japan won three gold medals, the United States won three medals (one gold medal, one silver medal and one bronze medal), South Korea won two silver medals, Italy won two medals (one silver medal and one bronze medal), and Belgium won one bronze medal.
