Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario is in the third round of the 2023 Miami Open. On Friday, Andreescu, the 2019 United States Open champion, defeated the seventh seed, Maria Sakkari of Greece, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
This was a significant win for Andreescu, who is ranked 31st in the world. Sakkari is a two-time grand slam semifinalist as she reached the final four of the 2021 French Open and 2021 United States Open. Andreescu had the slight edge when it came to the serve. Both players played at an extremely high level, and deserve high praise.
This was the second time in Andreescu’s career she has beaten Sakkari. She also was victorious in the semifinals of the 2021 Miami Open, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.
In the third round, Andreescu will play American Sofia Kenin. Like Andreescu, Kenin is a major champion. She won the 2020 Australian Open, where Kenin beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the final, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Andreescu’s grand slam championship came over American Serena Williams, as Andreescu was victorious, 6-3, 7-5.
