Canadian Olympic gold medalist Patrice Bergeron of L’Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec extended his National Hockey League record on Monday for consecutive Selke Trophy nominations with nine according to the Canadian Press. Bergeron set the record in 2018 with seven straight Selke Trophy nominations. Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings had the previous record with six straight Selke Trophy nominations from 2008 to 2013.

The Boston Bruins centre won the gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. In 2019-20, Bergeron had 31 goals and 25 assists for 56 points in 61 games. He was a +23 with 28 penalty minutes, 20 power-play points, one shorthanded goal, five game-winning goals, 203 shots on goal, 758 faceoff wins, a faceoff winning percentage of 57.8%, 46 blocked shots, 46 hits, 44 takeaways, and 22 giveaways.

Bergeron also played on a Bruins team that had the best record in the regular season in 2019-20. At 44 wins, 14 regulation losses, and 12 losses in extra time, the Bruins were the only team to reach the century mark when it came to points. Their 100 points were six more points than the second-place St. Louis Blues at 94 points.

The other two nominees for the Selke Trophy are also Canadian. They are St. Louis Blues centre Ryan OReilly of Clinton, Ontario, and Philadelphia Flyers centre Sean Couturier of Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Bergeron meanwhile is tied for the most the Selke Trophies all-time with four. He won in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2017. He is tied with Bob Gainey of Peterborough, Ontario, who won the first four Selke Trophies for the best defensive forward in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens from 1978 to 1981.
