The Ottawa Senators retired the jersey number four of Chris Phillips on Tuesday. Phillips becomes the second Senators player in franchise history to have his number retired. The first was Daniel Alfredsson, who had his number 11 retired by Ottawa on December 29, 2016.
Phillips of Calgary, Alberta, played his entire National Hockey League career with the Senators from 1997 to 2015. A defenseman, Phillips was the first overall pick in the 1996 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In 1179 National Hockey League regular season games, Phillips had 71 goals, 217 assists, 288 points, was a +68, 756 penalty minutes, 59 power play points, 22 shorthanded points, 13 game winning goals and 1421 shots on goal.
In his career, Phillips also had three shorthanded goals. They came in a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on November 15, 2006, in a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild on February 14, 2009 and in a 6-5 loss to the Nashville Predators on October 22, 2009.
Phillips also had one career goal on a penalty shot. That came in a 6-2 Senators win over the Carolina Hurricanes on December 28, 2005.
In the postseason, Phillips had six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 114 games. He was a +3 with 105 penalty minutes, one power play goal, one game winning goal and 142 shots on goal. Phillips’s postseason game winning goal came in overtime. On May 21, 2003, Phillips scored the overtime winner from Vaclav Varada and Marian Hossa in game six of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Senators won 2-1 over the New Jersey Devils.
Phillips was also good luck for the Senators on Tuesday from the Canadian Tire Centre. The Senators upset the Buffalo Sabres 7-4. Jean-Gabriel Pageau of Ottawa, Ontario led the Senators offensively with two goals and two assists for four points.
