Okotoks Dawgs win WCBL Championship

The Okotoks Dawgs have won the first ever Western Canadian Baseball League championship. The top junior baseball league in western Canada changed its name from the Western Major Baseball League to the Western Canadian Baseball League prior to the 2019 season.

In a best out of three final, the Dawgs defeated the Regina Red Sox two games to none. In the clinching game on Friday night from Seaman Stadium in Okotoks, Alberta, the Dawgs defeated the Red Sox 8-6 to win their first league championship since 2009. In the process, the Dawgs won the Harry Hallis Memorial Trophy.

In game two on Friday, the Dawgs had a monster eighth inning. Heading into the inning, they trailed the Red Sox 5-4, and then scored four runs to take an 8-5 lead. Then in the ninth, the Red Sox scored once, but were unable to score the necessary three runs to tie the game.

Dawgs outfielder Davis Todosichuk of Kelowna, British Columbia led the Dawgs offensively with three hits and three runs batted in. All of Todosichuk’s hits were singles. On the mound, Tanner Simpson had the quality start as he gave up three earned runs in six innings, while Dan Ferrario got the win as he had a perfect inning of relief. The Dawgs had won game one of the series 7-2 on Thursday in Regina.
