Mikael Kingsbury wins two World Cup moguls gold medals

It was a terrific weekend for Canadian mogulists in Val St. Come, Quebec over the weekend. In four events, Team Canada came away with four medals. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Mikael Kingsbury of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won gold in men’s moguls on Friday and men’s dual moguls on Saturday. Maia Schwinghammer of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan won gold in women’s moguls on Friday, and Julien Viel of Quebec City, Quebec won silver in men’s moguls on Friday.

In men’s moguls on Friday, Kingsbury posted a winning score of 87.42 points. Viel was in second with 80.56 points. Olli Penttala of Finland won the bronze medal with 78.28 points. Kingsbury reached the podium by 11.24 points and Viel reached the podium by 4.38 points. Emil Holmgren of Sweden finished in fourth place with a score of 76.18 points.

In women’s moguls on Friday, Schwinghammer had a winning score of 80.07 points. Jaelin Kauf of the United States won the silver medal with 77.85 points. Olivia Giaccio of the United States won the bronze medal with 77.71 points. Schwinghammer reached the podium by 4.86 points over Perrine Laffont of France, who was in fourth place with 75.21 points.

In men’s dual moguls on Saturday, Kingsbury beat silver medalist Benjamin Cavet of France 22-13 in the final. Nick Page of the United States won the bronze medal. Kingsbury beat Asher Michel of the United States 23-12 in the first round, Mateo Jeannesson of Great Britain 23-12 in the quarterfinals, and Page 21-14 in the semifinals.

For Kingsbury, he has now won 96 World Cup gold medals and 136 World Cup medals overall (20 silver medals and 10 bronze medals). Schwinghammer won her very first World Cup gold medal and third medal overall. She has won one silver medal (dual moguls in Bakuriani, Georgia on December 23, 2023) and won one bronze medal (moguls in Idre Fjall, Sweden on December 6, 2024). For Viel, he has won two World Cup medals. He previously placed third in Cheisa in Valmalenco, Italy on February 11, 2023.

In the World Cup men’s moguls standings, Kingsbury leads with 480 points. Cavet is second with 278 points. Viel is seventh with 166 points. In the World Cup women’s moguls standings, Schwinghammer is in third place with 300 points. Laffont leads with 410 points and Giaccio is in second with 325 points. In the World Cup men’s dual moguls standings, Kingsbury leads with 232 points. Cavet is in second place with 205 points.

Kingsbury won the gold medal in men’s moguls at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The medals for Kingsbury, Viel and Schwinghammer will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
