Canucks trade Danton Heinen to Penguins

According to nhl.com on Friday, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired two Canadians from the Vancouver Canucks. They were forward Danton Heinen of Langley, British Columbia and defenseman Vincent Desharnais of Laval, Quebec. In addition to Heinen and Desharnais, the Penguins acquired a first round pick in 2025 (possibly 2026), and right wing prospect Melvin Fernstrom.  The Canucks meanwhile received defenseman Marcus Pettersson and left winger Drew O’Connor.

Heinen is returning to the Penguins after playing two seasons there from 2021 to 2023. He has also played for the Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks and Canucks.

This season Heinen has six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in 51 games. He is a -1 with 31 penalty minutes, two power play points, 44 shots on goal, 14 faceoff wins, 25 blocked shots, 50 hits, 11 takeaways and 26 giveaways.

Desharnais has three assists for the Canucks this season. He had one goal and 15 assists for 16 points over the last two seasons with the Edmonton Oilers.

Pettersson has played two seasons with the Ducks and seven seasons with the Penguins. This season he has three goals and 15 assists for 18 points for Pittsburgh.

O’Connor has played the last five seasons with Pittsburgh. In 2024-25, he has six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 53 games. The Canucks are one point back of the Calgary Flames for a playoff spot.
