Michelle Li of Markham, Ontario has won her second career medal at the Commonwealth Games. Eight years after winning gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in women’s badminton singles, Li won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
In the gold medal game on Monday, Li lost 21-15, 21-13 to silver medalist Pusarla Venkata Sindhu of India. Yeo Jia Min of Singapore won the bronze medal with a 21-14, 22-20 win over Kristy Gilmour of Scotland.
Li, who was seeded second, did not have to play a match until the third round. That is because she had a first round bye and then moved on to round three when Abigail Holden of England withdrew due to a knee injury. In the third round, Li beat Insyirah Khan of Singapore 21-10, 21-9. In the quarterfinals, Li beat Rachel Darragh of Northern Ireland, 21-14, 21-14. Then in the semifinals, Li beat Gilmour 21-23, 23-21, 21-18.
Li’s silver badminton medal is the final medal for Team Canada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. They finished with 92 medals (26 gold medals. 32 silver medals, and 34 bronze medals). Australia was on top of the medal standings with 178 medals. England was second with 176 medals. The silver medal for Li will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
