Canada wins four gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Team Canada won four gold medals on Sunday at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The gold medals came in athletics, boxing and beach volleyball.

In athletics, Evan Dunfee of Richmond, British Columbia placed first in the men’s 10 000 metre walk. The  reigning Olympic bronze medalist in the 50 kilometre walk from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, posted a winning time of 38 minutes, 36.37 seconds. Declan Tingay of Australia won the silver medal with a time of 38 minutes, 42.33 seconds. Sandeep Kumar of India won the bronze medal with a time of 38 minutes, 49.21 seconds.

Canada’s other gold medal in athletics came in the women’s 4×400 metres. The Canadian team comprised of Kyra Constantine of Toronto, Ontario, Natassha McDonald of Mississauga, Ontario, Micha Powell of Montreal, Quebec, Aiyanna Stiverne of Laval, Quebec. Canada won the gold medal with a time of 3:25.84. Jamaica won the silver medal with a time of 3:26.93 and Scotland won the bronze medal with a time of 3:30.15. England initially won the gold medal, but was disqualified for a lane infringement.

In boxing, Tammara Thibeault of Saint-Georges, Quebec defeated silver medalist Rady Gramane of Mozambique in the gold medal bout 5-0 to win the women’s 75 kilogram boxing competition. Caitlin Parker of Australia and Jacinta Umunnakwe of Nigeria shared the bronze medal. Thibeault beat Hepseba  Angela of the Cayman Islands in the quarterfinals and Caitlin Parker of Australia 5-0 in the semifinals.

In beach volleyball, Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto, Ontario and Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ontario won the gold medal by beating the Australian duo of Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy 22-24, 21-17, 15-12 in the gold medal game. Artacho and Clancy won the silver medal, and Miller Pata and Sherysyn Toko of Vanuatu won the bronze medal. Humana-Paredes and Pavan went undefeated in the tournament as they won all six of their games.

Team Canada won three more medals on Sunday. Daniel Dearing and Sam Schachter of Toronto, Ontario won silver in men’s beach volleyball, Rylan Wiens of Calgary, Alberta won silver in the men’s 10 metre platform diving, and Mia Vallee of Beaconsfield, Quebec won bronze in the women’s three metre springboard diving.

Canada has now won 91 medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (26 gold, 31 silver and 34 bronze). Australia leads with 174 medals and England is second with 166 medals.
