Kevin Gausman named American League Player of the Week

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week from August 1 to August 7. He becomes the second Blue Jays player honoured this year, following first baseman Vladimir Guerrero of Montreal, Quebec who was the American League Player of the Week for the week from June 13 to June 19.

In two games this past week, Gausman pitched 14 innings without giving up an earned run, for an earned run average of 0.00. He only gave up seven hits, had one walk and hit one batter for a sensational WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.57. Gausman also had 15 strikeouts.

In Gausman’s first appearance of the week, he picked up the win in a 3-1 Toronto win over the Tampa Bay Rays on August 2. Gausman pitched eight innings, and gave up one hit and one walk, to go along with 10 strikeouts. In Gausman’s second appearance of the week, he threw six shutout innings in a 3-2 Toronto win over the Minnesota Twins on August 7. Gausman gave up six hits and had five strikeouts.

In 21 games this season, Gausman has a record of eight wins and eight losses with an earned run average of 2.91. In 117 2/3 innings pitched, he has given up 125 hits, 38 earned runs and 20 walks, to go along with 137 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.23.

The Blue Jays are currently at 60 wins and 49 losses and have the best wildcard record in the American League. They currently lead the Baltimore Orioles by three games for a playoff spot.
