Mark Arendz wins second career Paralympic gold medal

Mark Arendz of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island won his second career Paralympic gold medal on Monday in Canada (Tuesday in Beijing). At the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing, Arendz won the gold medal in the men’s 10 kilometre biathlon standing event.

Arendz posted a time of 31 minutes, 45.2 seconds. Grygorii Vovchynskyi of Ukraine won the silver medal with a time of 32 minutes, 18 seconds. Alexandr Gerlits of Kazakhstan won the bronze medal with a time of 33 minutes, 6.5 seconds. Arendz earned a medal by one minute, and 44.1 seconds. Junbao Wu of China finished in fourth place with a time of 33 minutes, 29.3 seconds.

Arendz became disabled at age seven when his arm got caught in the blades of a grain auger. As a result. he lost his arm. Arendt’s prior gold medal at the Paralympic Winter Games came at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, when he won gold in the men’s 10 kilometre biathlon standing division. Arendz now has 10 Paralympic Winter Games medals in his career–seven in biathlon and three in cross country skiing.

In para ice hockey, Canada reached the semifinals on Thursday with a 6-0 win over South Korea. James Dunn of Wallacetown, Ontario had a hat trick. The other Canadian goal scorers were captain Tyler McGregor of Forest, Ontario, Billy Bridges of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, and Liam Hickey of St.John’s, Newfoundland.

Canada is in third place in the Paralympic Winter Games standings with 13 medals (five gold medals, two silver medals and six bronze medals). China leads with 27 medals and Ukraine is in second with 17 medals.
