
Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marc-Andre Fleury of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec has retired from the National Hockey League at age 40 according to Rogers Sportsnet on Thursday. Fleury initially announced on April 17, 2024 he would play one more season in 2024-25. With the Minnesota Wild eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs last night, it means Fleury will no longer be playing any NHL games.
Fleury played 21 National Hockey League regular seasons from 2003 to 2025. He was with the Pittsburgh Penguins for 13 seasons from 2003 to 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights for four seasons from 2017 to 2021, the Chicago Blackhawks from 2021 to 2022, and the Wild from 2022 to 2025.
In 1051 games, Fleury had a record of 575 wins, 339 regulation losses, 95 losses in extra time, and two ties. He had a goals against average of 2.60, save percentage of .912 and 76 shutouts. Fleury is second all-time in wins, only behind Canadian Olympic gold medalist Martin Brodeur of Montreal, Quebec, who had 691 wins. Fleury is also 10th all-time in shutouts.
Fleury was a Stanley Cup champion with the Penguins in 2009, 2016 and 2017. He was also a five-time NHL All-Star (2011, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020), William M. Jennings Trophy and Vezina Trophy winner in 2021, and was the backup goaltender for Team Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Brodeur was Fleury’s Olympic teammate in Vancouver, and also won gold at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
