Canadian Olympic gold medalist Maggie Mac Neil of London, Ontario won the silver medal in the women’s 100 metre butterfly at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Monday. For Mac Neil, it was her seventh medal in the history of the World Aquatics Championships.
Mac Neil posted a second place time of 56.45 seconds, Yufei Zhang of China won the gold medal with a time of 56.12 seconds. Torri Huske of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 56.61 seconds. Mac Neil earned a medal by 0.43 seconds. Emma McKeon of Australia finished in fourth place with a time of 56.88 seconds.
Mac Neil won her gold medal in the women’s 100 metre butterfly at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. She was also part of the Canadian teams that won the silver medal in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay and the bronze medal in the women’s 4×100 metre medley relay.
At the World Championships, Mac Neil has one gold medal, three silver medals, and three bronze medals. Her gold medal came in the women’s 100 metre butterfly at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Her other two silver medals came in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle and the mixed 4×100 metre freestyle at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Mac Neil’s bronze medals came in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle and women’s 4×100 metre medley at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, and in the women’s 4×100 metre medley at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The silver medal for Mac Neil will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
