Laura Hall leads three medal day for Canada at 2023 Winter Universiade

Team Canada won four medals on Monday at the 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, New York. Laura Hall of Salmon Arm, British Columbia won the gold medal in the women’s 3000 metre speed skating, Rose-Anne Grenier of Sainte-Marie, Quebec won the bronze medal in the women’s 3000 metre speed skating, and Elizabeth Filiatrault of Collingwood, Ontario won the bronze medal in the women’s ski cross event.

In the women’s 3000 metre speed skating, Hall had a winning time of 4:25.70. Grenier was in third place with a time of 4:29.10. Hall, who attends the University of Calgary, reached the podium by 7.67 seconds over Maho Karai of Japan, who had a fourth place time of 4:33.37. Grenier, who attends Laval University, reached the podium by 4.27 seconds. Jiwoo Park of South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 4:28.18. In the women’s ski cross event, Filiatrault placed third in the Big Final behind gold medalist Lin Nakanishi of Japan and silver medalist Nikola Fricova of Slovakia.

In men;’s curling, Canada improved to a record of four wins and one loss following a 6-5 win over Sweden. The Canadian team is skipped by Dalhousie University’s Owen Purcell of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Canada has now won five medals at the 2023 Winter Universiade–two gold medals and three bronze medals.
