According to CBC News on Wednesday, swimmer Julie Brousseau of Ottawa, Ontario tied the record for most medals won at a Canada Games with 11. The previous record was set by Hanna Henderson of Mississauga, Ontario, who won 11 medals at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg. It should be noted that even though Niagara Falls is the host of the 2022 Canada Games, the swimming portion of the multi-sport event took place in St. Catharines at Brock University, which is 17 minutes northwest of Niagara Falls.
Brousseau won six gold medals, one silver medal and four bronze medals last week. Her gold medals last week came in the 200 metre freestyle division, the 4×100 metre freestyle relay division, the 4×200 metre freestyle relay division, the 200 metre breaststroke, the 200 metre individual medley and the 400 metre individual medley. Brousseau’s silver medal came in the 4×100 metre medley relay, while her four bronze medals came in the 4×100 metre medley relay mixed division, the 4×100 metre freestyle relay mixed division, the 50 metre freestyle and the 100 metre freestyle.
Team Ontario currently leads the Canada Summer Games medal standings with 119 medals (49 gold, 35 silver and 35 bronze). They are comfortably in first place in the medal standings, as they have 36 more medals than British Columbia, which is in second place with 83 medals.
