Jay Triano inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame

Canadian basketball coach Jay Triano of Tillsonburg, Ontario has been inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame according to the Canadian Press on Wednesday. Triano has been a veteran coach in the National Basketball Association and for Team Canada on the international scene.

As a head coach, Triano spent three seasons coaching the Toronto Raptors from 2008 to 2011, and one season coaching the Phoenix Suns from 2017 to 2018. He had a record of 108 wins and 200 losses for a winning percentage of .351.

Triano has also spent many years as an assistant or associate coach in the NBA. He was with the Toronto Raptors from 2002 to 2008, the Portland Trail Blazers from 2012 to 2016, the Phoenix Suns from 2016 to 2017, the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022, the the Sacramento Kings from 2022 to 2025, and with the Dallas Mavericks from 2025 to 2026.

Outside of the NBA, Triano also coached men’s basketball at Simon Fraser University from 1988 to 1995, and Team Canada at the 2000 Olympic Winter Games in Sydney.

The 1990 Canadian Women’s Hockey Team was also inducted. At the 1990 Women’s World Hockey Championships, Canada won the gold medal in Ottawa, Ontario. Canada had an undefeated record of five wins and zero losses, and beat the United States 5-2 in the gold medal game. Canada outscored their opponents 61-8.
