The Calgary Flames acquired three Canadian players on Friday night from the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster trade according to Rogers Sportsnet. The new Flames are left winger Jonathan Huberdeau of Saint-Jerome, Quebec, defenseman MacKenzie Weegar of Ottawa, Ontario, and center Cole Schwindt of Kitchener, Ontario. The Flames also received a conditional first round draft in the 2025 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In return, the Panthers receive left winger Matthew Tkachuk and a conditional fourth round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

Huberdeau led the NHL in assists 85 this past year and was a second-team all-star at the left wing position in a breakout season. He had 30 goals, 115 points (tied for second in the NHL with Johnny Gaudreau), was a +35, 54 penalty minutes, 38 power-play points, five shorthanded points, seven game-winning goals, 18 faceoff wins, 28 blocked shots, 99 hits, 63 takeaways, and 85 giveaways.

Weegar had eight goals and 36 assists for 44 points. He was a +40 with 81 penalty minutes, three power-play points, two shorthanded goals, two game-winning goals, 203 shots on goal, 156 blocked shots, 179 hits, 74 takeaways, and 85 giveaways. Schwidt meanwhile had zero points in three games.

The Flames made the deal because they could not come to terms on a long-term contract with Tkachuk. Last year he had 42 goals and 62 assists for 104 points.
